I contacted our web hosting’s tech support only to be told that the problem has been fixed. I was not given any reason what was happening which caused our blog to become unavailable. I was able to update it yesterday and then it happened again. I decided to go online and chat with them so I can get the reason in writing.
This is what they told me:

[9:35:40 AM]: Ist there a server issue on your side?
[9:37:39 AM]: hello
Bill [9:38:18 AM]: several dozen php processes had crashed from your index.php once the server had reached max processes it could not start any more and because of the way it crahsed it could not clear the crashed ones
[9:38:33 AM]: I updated your php version so it should not happen again
