It’s school season in the Philippines again. Tuition, books and uniforms.

I remember the days when I was in school at Malate Catholic School way back when. The smell of fresh notebooks and recently sharpened pencils get me excited because it means it’s school season again and I will get to see my friends from school after summer vacation.

Do you remember those plastic cover we use to cover our books? During our time, we used to buy rolls and rolls of that, and since there were several kids going to school at the same time – - I think it was Kuya Monching, Ate Annie, Kuya Rommel, Ate Vina and me, we would get busy preparing our books, notebooks, bags and uniform before the first day of school. I was always in charge of cutting multiple strips of Scotch tape so Ate Annie can place a cover on my books.

Is the practice the same? I wonder how excited children get during school season these days. For us, it meant new uniforms and new school shoes. Nanay would take me to Divisoria or Baclaran to shop for undergarments and socks. She used to buy our shoes a couple of sizes larger and stuff them with paper at the tips until we grow into it. Hey, you gotta think of ways to save somehow if you’re sending five kids to school at the same time.

Memories of the good old days. It’s fun to look back.
