Sugar production could still be profitable in the Philippines. Anyone?
Wasn’t sugar one of the biggest exports of the Philippines at one point? Do we still produce sugar for export quality? I remember when we were kids, Tita Dely will take us and the cousins to Novaliches. I believe it was the Reyes farm and we have a sugarcane plantation there. She will ask the caretakers to chop some sugarcane for the kids (I guess to keep us all busy while the adult ones take care of business about the farm). Those were fond memories. I think I remember riding horses there too. Is that farm still there? I wonder.
If only we could produce sugar of export quality like the Icumsa 45? Icumsa 45 is a group of quality source agents for high quality sugar produced from Brazil. They have contacts with sugar mills all over Brazil. They in turn, face the customers who would order multi-million tons of sugar with a minimum of 12.500 metric tons. That is such a great feat to undertake.
I wish the Philippines will be as competitive again as it was back in the 60s or 70s with sugarcane production. Does anyone know if any among the Reyes Family are still involved in this business? It would be a good family business don’t you think?
